Zeitview's Inspection Software for Sustainable Energy and Infrastructure

Conducting Safer and Faster Asset Inspections with Aerial Imaging and AI

In the midst of climate change escalating, the need to swiftly transition to clean and renewable energy is paramount. Due to this, businesses have resorted from utilizing fossil fuel-based energy to using more sustainable sources such as hydropower and wind and solar technologies.

This change entails the use of sustainable energy assets, among them being solar panels, wind turbines, and dam structures. To ensure that these assets can work and function optimally, asset inspections and maintenance are also incredibly vital. With traditional, analog methods of inspections not only being costly but time-consuming as well, aerial imaging has become a great alternative.

Zeitview, a YC-backed startup founded by Dan Burton that was previously named DroneBase, is among some companies that offer aerial imaging services, integrating the use of drones with AI and machine learning capabilities for customers to create sustainable renewable energy infrastructure in a safer, faster, and lower-cost manner.

Typical renewable energy infrastructure inspections involve experts manually conducting check-ups every couple of months. While assets like solar panels and wind turbines are built to last and withstand strong weather impacts, without a doubt, to promote sustainability, they are still bound to break down. This entails spending an abundance of money and time to go through essential maintenance.

Over the years, drone and satellite imagery have increasingly been integrated into the processes of the infrastructure industry. Whether in monitoring construction to ensure projects run well or in conducting site surveys, engineers have been able to make informed and insightful decisions on account of more accurate and real-time, or at least near real-time, data from aerial imaging.

According to Global Market Insights (GMI), the aerial imaging market can reach over $25B by 2032, with the transformative tech playing a major role not only in increasing efficiency in construction processes but also in documenting climate change effects, with this protecting renewable resources. GMI believes that aerial imaging can be a great solution for assessing damages caused by climate change-induced disasters such as floods, wildfires, etc.

In relation to this, Energy Transition Ventures’ founder and managing partner Neal Dikeman finds aerial inspection vital in the renewable energy and infrastructure industry. These advancements and beliefs about aerial imaging are what inspired the creation of Zeitview’s advanced inspection software, built to make transitioning to renewable energy and sustainable infrastructure safer and faster with lower cost.

Improved Performance and Longevity

Zeitview’s software utilizes drones to capture multi-modal data such as images and thermal readings of infrastructure like wind turbines and solar panels. The data is then run through AI and machine learning algorithms with insights from industry experts to screen, identify, and classify any present anomaly to alert its customers when issues arise.

The easy-to-use platform is equipped with features that allow customers to access data and imagery as well as the analysis and reporting of said data all in one location. The platform also has features that allow teams to collaborate and share reports, providing everyone involved the means to mitigate risks and maximize solutions together.

Zeitview believes that its platform can offer flexibility in cost, money, and time while also providing companies the ability to scale their operations at the same time by offering low-cost, simplified data and insights acquisition. While the firm mainly serves asset owners, Zeitview also sells inspection imagery and AI-powered insights to relevant investors, utility companies, and policymakers.

As of February 2023, Zeitview has raised a total of $114M in funding. Its last round of funding, which resulted in $55M, was led by Valor Equity Partners with participation from Union Square Ventures, Upfront Ventures, Euclidean Capital, Energy Transition Ventures, and Hearst Ventures. Zeitview states that it will utilize its funds to further improve and expand its product, acquire more customers, and recruit more staff to continue to promote sustainable energy and infrastructure.
