Terra's Secure and Personalized API
Integrating Health Wearables and Apps Through a Single API
The world of health and wellness technology is rapidly evolving, with more and more transformative apps and wearables being produced and developed, driven by the importance of personal health data.
From the many options that exist, like FitBits and Garmin sports watches, it is increasingly apparent that the ability to understand one’s overall health at all times has become a significant point of engagement, making the more personalized the features, the better.
Terra, a startup founded by Kyriakos Eleftheriou and Raouf Yousfi, stands to innovate in the health and wellness industry with comprehensive information and personalization, by creating a user-friendly API that integrates health data such as heart rate and activity levels from wearables into applications.
App Development with API and SDK
Before pursuing Terra, Eleftheriou and Yousfi worked on projects that focused on continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). After realizing the deep-seated value of user health data, however, the duo stopped and decided to look at the bigger picture by delving into the personalization and connectivity of said data.
Terra eliminated the technical hurdles associated with data integration by offering its wide range of products. While developers would usually have to spend plenty of time and resources writing code from scratch to individually integrate data between devices and apps, developers can simply utilize Terra’s API.
Eleftheriou believes that with features like Terra’s, linking shuffled music selection with one’s heart rate and activity or sleep levels using streaming platforms like Spotify for better song recommendations can happen. If one seemingly needs more adrenaline during a run or requires a cool-down as their sports watch detects a too-fast resting heart rate, Spotify can recommend music that fits their situation.
Terra’s API allows developers to access, manage, and analyze health data from fitness wearables and sensors, such as Fitbit and Garmin. When dealing with mobile health providers that do not offer Web APIs like Samsung or Apple Health, Terra’s mobile software development kit (SDK) tools are designed to simplify a developer’s workload.
Developers can integrate with Terra’s SDK and utilize all its functionalities with one install, followed by connection initiations and data requests. The startup also claims that its Web-hook*-based API has the ability to deliver backend-to-backend data the moment it becomes available, in addition to continuous updates automatically applied to every developer’s app.

Equipped with authentication widgets available in a variety of languages like Arabic, German, Spanish, and English, Terra’s dashboard provides clear documentation of data that can be easily managed. The widgets are available to install in React Native, Swift, Flutter, and many more in-app browsers and frameworks. With these features, app development can become much faster and more versatile.

Customization and Security
With comprehensive information and personalization as key factors in mind, Terra has what it calls Graph API, a feature that allows developers to create interactive visualizations of health and fitness data with ease. The API’s interactivity highlights the pivotal impact of engagement on app users.
Terra has also collaborated with OdinAI, a research and development company focusing on AI and machine learning, for personalized recommendation generation features. The two startups aim to harness AI and ML capabilities to make transformative information like AI-powered personalized health insights, predictive health analysis, and disease management available someday.
Ensuring security and privacy for all the user health data being leveraged, Terra applies industry-standard safeguards and practices such as end-to-end transit encryption using SSL and HMAC, zero data sharing with third parties, as well as privacy and security awareness training taken by all employees. Last September, Terra adopted numerous security procedures and legal agreements with clients that made the startup HIPAA-compliant, guaranteeing all health information collected as private, secure, and legally protected.
Terra’s platform provides a more seamless and integrated experience not just for developers but for application users as well. When circumstances usually require users to switch between multiple apps to access different services, developers can combine those services into a single interface with an abundance of functionality for users to utilize.
Mid-2023, Terra raised $2.8M during a seed round run by General Catalyst, Samsung Next, and NEXT Ventures, with plans of stretching out its team and further developing its tech. There is no telling yet what Terra’s API can bring to the health and wellness industry, with opportunities boundless.
