Skill-Lync’s Online Engineering Education Platform
Providing Edtech and Job Assistance for Millions of Engineering Students
Advancements in technology have transformed the way numerous, possibly all, industries work, including the education industry. Its rise acknowledged as early as the 2000s, eLearning, whether in the form of training programs or gamified courses, changed the way we acquire knowledge, removing any geographical as well as time constraints.
With how accommodating technology has increasingly become, eLearning has been used to provide flexibility, accessibility, and cost-effectiveness for people around the world who, for varying reasons, aren’t able to go through in-person programs. The continued growth of eLearning provides great opportunities for tech-savvy companies looking to improve education systems.
This includes Skill-Lync, a YC-backed startup founded by Surya Paneerselvam and Sarang that runs an online learning platform that focuses on providing students in the engineering sector with high-quality education and assisting them in finding their future jobs.
E-Learning for Your Future
Starting out as short courses uploaded on YouTube, Skill Lync was built with the millions of engineering students graduating each year in India in mind. According to the duo founder’s experience in university, engineering undergraduate programs in India lacked the practical and up-to-date skills very much necessary to join the engineering sector’s workforce or do well enough to enter master's programs.
With how competitive the workforce continuously turns each year, searching for employment becomes harder than ever, especially in a field where those unemployed and searching for jobs far outweigh the positions available. In the case of Skill-Lync’s founders, the two only managed to find a satisfying job after completing their master’s at the University of Wisconsin, Madison, landing a job there.
This pain point prompted the two to finally take a step further from YouTube courses by creating an ed-tech platform in 2016 that caters to those searching for work in the software engineering sector. By 2017, Skill-Lync was filled with programs that only focused on mechanical engineering. As time went by, however, the platform accommodated those interested in studying electrical, civil, and electronic engineering as well.
Job Search Assistance
Skill-Lync’s programs and courses let students learn in-depth technical concepts that are aimed to be especially beneficial in the workplace, coming in the form of various courses that would span from eight months of 40 hours per week to part-time studies of 15 months with 20 hours per week. These courses, which are, on average, priced at $250 per unit, cover studies on data science and machine learning, full-stack web development, embedded systems for EV applications, and more.
Once students enroll in the PG program of their choosing, they can learn from pre-recorded videos and acquire assistance from one-on-one support team members of Skill-Lync. Aside from studying, Skill-Lync was also designed to connect students who have completed their studies with Skill-Lync to their future careers.
Skill-Lync course graduates can build their Skill-Lync profiles that will make them “searchable” by companies and employers. Once they have built their profiles, they will face assessments that, if completed, will lead to job interviews. According to Skill-Lync, over 500 companies have hired students from Skill-Lync with 2000+ placements.
Skill-Lync views education and job search assistance as if it were a product someone buys through online shops like Amazon. While the company guarantees that anyone who finishes their course will receive a full-time job opportunity, it also runs a policy in which if students do not end up getting a job, they have the right to ask for a full refund.
Skill-Lync students are only required to pay for the courses they take, with no compulsory upfront extra charges when they succeed in joining a company courtesy of Skill-Lync’s courses. Instead, they have the option to either pay Skill-Lync 15% of their salary for the first two years or pay $10K up front.
With Skill-Lync’s ed-tech online platform, it is hoped that numerous batches of engineering students each year could strengthen their portfolio and practical abilities, easing the painful process of job pursuits in the engineering industry.
