The potential of extended reality (XR) technology, the umbrella term covering virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR), has been showing promise. While already quite widespread in the gaming industry, its potential goes beyond that, with players starting to utilize XR in education and healthcare.

The rapidly evolving field is viewed to be transformative, being one of the few things people in the past probably imagined the future would look like, along with robots and flying cars. The tech still tends to be inaccessible, however, as those delving into the subject normally require a high level of technical skill and expertise as well as costly hardware.

ShapesXR, a collaborative XR design platform founded by CEO Inga Petryaevskaya, aims to break the two main barriers to entering and thriving in the XR industry with its 3D content-creating and spatial design computing tools, friendly for developers and non-technical users.

Breaking Hurdles with Accessibility

Aware of the many benefits of XR, especially in industries requiring detailed, intricate designs possibly otherwise impossible to create and achieve using other forms of design technology, Petryevskaya built ShapesXR as a platform whose variety of tools and assets are easy to use and learn about, with an intuitive drag-and-drop interface.

Petryevskaya believes that whether in creating video games, training simulators, or any other projects to bring to market, it is vital for 3D content creation to be accessible, allowing more people to leverage the power of VR and AR.

ShapesXR’s platform enables users to design their own scenes, animations, storyboards, and interactions using templates available in ShapesXR’s library and brush them up to their liking, whether by scaling them, changing their colors or materials, adding texts, and so on. ShapesXR also supports asset imports of various 2D and 3D formats, such as JPG, NG, OBJ, GLB, gITF, and Figma frames. Users can create prototypes of their designs to test and view their interactability using ShapesXR’s intuitive stage systems features before finalization.

While the finalization of designs and user testing usually requires the expertise of programmers, ShapesXR makes it so that creators with zero programming background, even those unaware of a single line of code, can innovate and create what they wish. Without much need to involve developers, at least early on in the process, users can save time and cost.

ShapesXR is also equipped with MR features, allowing users to create their designs in what the company calls dollhouse mode. In this mode, users can bring any of the designs they’ve built virtually into their living room or kitchen. A passthrough material tool even allows users to emulate occlusion. Once users complete their designs, they can seamlessly export them into game engines like Unity.

Collaboration and Presentation

ShapesXR’s editing space allows collaboration between design team members and clients, as well. The platform’s collaboration feature lets multiple people work on the same projects at the same time in a spatial VR environment, essentially working together on a VR design inside VR. The VR environment can also be utilized by users as a place to interactively present their working progress and/or their final products to clients and customers.

Logitech, one of the organizations that have utilized ShapesXR aside from ByteDance, Meta, Stanford University, and MIT, even had its marketers and designers sculpt an entire Berlin conference. Entirely designed in 3D, the room was filled with stakeholders finalizing the look and layout of the venue, participants interacting with booths, and employees showcasing products for prospective sponsors.

The platform is available on Meta Quest 2 and Quest Pro and will become available on the upcoming Quest 3. Following the company’s $8.6M seed funding round led by Supernode Global, ShapesXR plans to expand its platform to Apple Vision Pro, Pico, and Magic Leap.
