Creating and Editing Videos with Ease

AI is rapidly evolving and it is not looking like it would stop anytime soon. We have gone through a whole year since OpenAI released ChatGPT and kickstarted the AI boom.

In that year, a great number of companies across various industries have either developed their own versions of generative AI or created products and services using generative AI, whether in pursuit of efficiency, speed, or accessibility.

The release of new AI products and services is endless and continuous. Very recently, just in September 2023, a startup named Pika Labs run by CEO Demi Guo and CTO Chenlin Meng launched and showcased Pika 1.0, a text-to-video suite filled with AI-powered tools that allow anyone without prior video production or editing experience to create their own.

Ideas to Video

Video is a form of media that has not only been useful for entertainment but also in a more formal context, often used as a marketing strategy to creatively build a business’ brand and attract new customers.

The process of creating and editing quality videos is known to be quite complex, requiring plenty of skill, resources, and budgeting, which businesses may need to manage other things. This makes high-quality video production a difficult venture for most despite many wishing they could for whatever purpose.

Familiar with the concept of being creators at heart but not having enough professional skills in the matter, former Ph.D. students in Stanford’s AI Lab Guo and Meng made use of existing AI-powered video creation tools such as Adobe Photoshop and Runway but still failed to hit the spot.

The complications they faced in their video production process pushed them to develop tools that can make transforming simple or complicated ideas and realizing them into video form easier for everyone. This is where Pika 1.0 comes in.

Accessibility for All

Since the launch of the startup’s easy-to-use AI-powered video generator, over 500,000 people have used the software and succeeded in creating unique videos.

Pika users can create lengthy videos in numerous styles and switch between them before finalization, whether in live-action, anime, or 3D cartoony animations through Discord or by signing in on Pika’s website. Users can simply type a description of what they want in their video onto a chatbox and Pika generates them as a reply.

Pika is also able to generate video through uploaded images. The suite is equipped with a variety of tools that let users make changes to their videos, like adjusting music, adding text overlays, changing aspect ratios, and inserting objects within a video.

By pushing the boundaries of generative AI and developing its video production suite, Pika wishes to use AI to democratize professional-quality video creation and help everyone nurture their creativity.

Pika has raised $55M in a funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. Other participants include Homebrew, Conviction Capital, SV Angel, Ben’s Bites, and several angel investors; Quora founder Adam D’Angelo, Dex-GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, and Giphy co-founder Alex Chung. The startup plans to utilize its funds to continue developing Pika’s generator and expand its team.
