Mighty Buildings’ Beautiful 3D-Printed Houses

One of the issues our world currently faces is the housing crisis. The amount of costs that come with building a home has risen due to inflation, and with the population growing at a rate outpacing the speed of construction, supplies can’t keep up. As a result, not only do people face difficulty in affording housing, but there just aren’t enough houses for everyone.

The effects of costly housing run quite deep, too, affecting businesses. With housing being the most significant portion of income for most, the more they have to spend on housing, the less they can spend on everything else, like the consumption of goods and services. This would cause a halt in sales growth and employment gains in various sectors.

Even if we are capable of building housing fast, the consequence that comes with it is the climate crisis. Traditional home construction in the U.S. alone produces 27% of CO2 emissions and 600m tons of waste annually, ceaselessly hurting our planet.

Mighty Buildings, a 2018 Y Combinator alumni with active founders Slava Solonitsyn and Dmitry Starodubtsev, utilizes its resources to confront the two crises, creating a paradigm shift in the industry with its revolutionary 3D-printed houses.

3D Printing

Companies in the construction industry have started utilizing 3D printers, as their use can reduce construction time and cost. With these printers, homes can be built much faster compared to traditional construction methods. With the short supply of construction workers upping the cost of hiring them, 3D printers can also significantly reduce labor costs.

3D printing can make housing accessible to more people, as well, since printers can be transported to remote and hard-to-reach areas more easily. Its ability to create buildings with complex shapes and features that are difficult to achieve with traditional methods also means that houses can be assembled more easily, allowing energy to be used more efficiently.

In constructing homes, Mighty Buildings utilizes its patented 3D printing technology to achieve automation, reduce waste, and reduce carbon emissions. The company has managed to eliminate 99% of construction waste, use fewer materials, and lessen emissions by reducing 2-4 tons of waste per home. The high mobility of 3D printers allows materials to no longer be moved to and from construction sites, reducing carbon emissions further.

With the help of 3D printing, Mighty Buildings managed to build its first accessory dwelling unit (ADU)*, which eventually led to a 79,000-square-foot facility. The facility is resilient against a changing climate, with building materials that are highly insulated, soundproof, water-mold-mildew-insect-resistant, and earthquake and hurricane-resistant, too.

*ADU: Accessory Dwelling Unit, a smaller, independent residential dwelling unit located on the same lot as a stand-alone, single-family home. Also goes by accessory apartments, secondary suites, and granny flats. Usually built to increase house affordability.

Partners in Sustainability

Mighty Buildings’ awareness of the aggravating housing shortage has also pushed the company to up the ante. The company has partnered with a number of nonprofits and government agencies over the years to build affordable housing for low- and middle-income families.

The company has also been working on developing zero-waste production and concrete-free formulas to ensure that everything it does plays a part in achieving sustainability. Without forgetting the importance of credibility and assurance, the company uses proven life cycle assessment (LCA)* methodologies and consults with third-party experts every step of the way.

*LCA: Life-cycle Assessment, a process of evaluating the effects that a product has on the environment over the entire period of its life, thereby increasing resource-use efficiency and decreasing liabilities.

Most of the solutions to the two crises mentioned above are ones also run by Mighty Buildings’ competitors in the industry. So, what makes Mighty Buildings so different?

A New Material

Within Mighty Buildings’ construction projects lies a vital proprietary building material called Light Stone Material (LSM).

Developed by the company’s own team of scientists and robotics technology, the material is lightweight, durable, fire-resistant, and water-resistant, ideal for a variety of construction applications. Mighty Builds has utilized LSM to build homes, ADUs, and commercial buildings but plans to craft furniture and appliances with it as well.

Mighty Buildings is reportedly developing a newer version of LSM that is made entirely from recycled materials. The material is unique to Mighty Buildings’ craft as it has not yet been licensed LSM to any other company.

Recently, Mighty Buildings raised $52 million, totaling $150 million in funds. The recent round was led by Waed Ventures and Bold Capital, with Khosla Ventures as a participant.

With its collected funds and continuously improved technology, Mighty Buildings intends to improve its craft further in hopes of going Net-Zero by 2028 and making carbon-neutral housing a reality for everyone.
