Lawyer Copilot Model, Harvey AI
Bringing Efficiency and Customizability for Every Legal Professional's Needs
Generative AI has continuously inserted itself into various industries over the past year, cutting costs and bringing workflow efficiency. While most prominently found in manufacturing, retail, and finance, among others, AI can now be found in the legal industry as well.
AI startup Harvey, founded by Gabriel Pererya and Winston Weinberg, developed Harvey AI, a customizable large language model trained specifically as a legal copilot, made to assist lawyers in tackling client issues across various practice areas, jurisdictions, and legal systems.
Secure Legal Specialties
Similar to ChatGPT, Harvey AI processes large amounts of data and responds to a user’s natural language prompts and questions. Built on a version of ChatGPT and hence trained with general internet data, Harvey AI’s specialization in legal includes training on general legal data as well, along with public cases and law reference materials.
By harnessing machine learning and natural language processing, Harvey AI is able to provide legal professionals assistance in legal research, contract analyses, litigations, due diligence, and regulatory compliance.
Though currently still in Beta, Harvey AI’s customizable nature would allow further training with a specific firm’s own products, history, templates, and overall data, allowing the model to make more specialized recommendations and predictions.
Harvey AI’s features allow firms to make faster, more informed decisions to solve client issues and leave tedious, labor-intensive tasks to the model. Instead of having to perform legal research and manually edit legal documents, professionals can focus on more complex, high-value tasks.
Cutting costs, boosting workflow efficiency, and improving client satisfaction are made all the more possible.
Data Safety and Sensitivity
Known for its lack of privacy in handling sensitive information, the use of generative AI in the legal field has, without a doubt, become a cause for concern. With the risk of third-party human reviews or sensitive client information being exposed, generative AI can bring ethical problems.
Built to become a natural language-based intermediary between technology and law, Harvey ensures not only the great capabilities of Harvey AI, one of them being the unlikeliness of hallucinations, but its safety in handling data as well. Harvey’s security advisory board deeply embeds itself in the development of Harvey AI, with expertise in best-in-class security practices, comprehensive security certifications, as well as infrastructure.
Harvey has also gained multiple certifications for security policies and frameworks, including SOC2 I, SOC2 II, CCPA, ISO 27001, and GDPR. In addition to this, Harvey plans to build a proprietary service that caters to an engaging firm’s specific needs, whether in terms of legal accuracy or security and privacy. Harvey also disclaims that its AI tool is meant to be utilized with licensed attorneys’ supervision and not targeted for nonlawyer use.
Harvey recently raised $80M in a Series B funding round supported by Elad Gil, Kleiner Perkins, OpenAI, and Sequoia Capital, bringing a total of Harvey’s funds to over $100M. The startup will continue developing its AI model and expand its team in the process.
Two major law firms, Allen & Overy and Macfarlanes, have partnered with Harvey AI, advocating the model’s immense efficiency and intelligence. More than 3,500 of Allen & Overy’s lawyers have asked 40,000 questions to Harvey AI since November 2022, with the model showing capabilities in multiple languages across diverse areas. The firm has also utilized Harvey AI for a trial case. 650 Macfarlanes lawyers have utilized the model in client work.
