PaLM2 Becomes Google's Potent Asset in the AI War
The AI boom has been beneficial to many. Whether to students who are replacing tutors with chatbots, workers in various sectors that require assistance in customer service, or a man paralyzed from spinal cord injury who can now walk again thanks to AI thought decoders, it is undeniable that AI holds a transformative power that is impactful and mostly beneficial.
Though this is the case, AI has also caused a shift that may be less beneficial to other parties. Google parent company Alphabet, for example, has expressed worry that its core search business may decline significantly as AI chatbots start to take traffic, potentially dominating the business in the long term. Though the rise of AI isn’t the only cause for worry for Alphabet, with the digital ad market also slumping at the moment, how has Alphabet, along with Google, coped with this almost sudden AI-heavy shift?
Generative AI in Search and Media
It is not so surprising that an entity as great in terms of capability and swift in terms of development as AI would be, at the very least, slightly threatening to Google and Alphabet. Considering how the search business must be one of the biggest, if not the biggest, sources of revenue for them, being replaced by AI chatbots would cause a major drop.
With Microsoft’s Bing search engine integrating with OpenAI’s ChatGPT early this year, that’s already one of Google’s counterparts proving that AI is not only functional in the search business but may also be thriving. Thankfully, all this worry hasn’t brought Google and Alphabet down. Instead of continuously viewing AI as a threat, Google CEO Sundar Pichai has embraced the fact that AI isn’t going anywhere and that it would become the future of search one way or another.
Aside from already creating and releasing its homegrown AI chatbot, Bard, last February, Google has unveiled PaLM 2, its latest and most powerful LLM, trained on scientific and mathematical data as well as over 100 spoken languages and 20 programming languages. PaLM 2 is currently already being used to power Bard, Google Workspace products, and PaLM API.
Based on internal documents, the company has also decided to utilize AI even further by incorporating generative AI into its core products. Products such as search, automated advertising, and ad-supported consumer services that could potentially run across over 100 Google products, including Google Play Store, Gmail, Android Search, and Maps, would be fueled by LLMs.
Google is currently planning on using PaLM 2-powered tools to enable advertisers to generate their own media assets. The company is also testing PaLM 2’s use on YouTube by testing out title and description generation. Google has also experimented with letting PaLM 2 provide five video ideas based on relevant topics.
Lastly, the internal documents seem to show that Google has been working on an internal Stable Diffusion-like product for image creation. If developed, the product, similar to OpenAI’s DALL-E, can render images swiftly in various styles according to text-based directions and instructions from users.
Though Google currently has abundant plans involving AI, it, along with Alphabet, has other strong points that have helped them stay afloat and profitable so far.
Shares and Strong Points
In late July, Alphabet unveiled that its shares have risen about 10% to $132.58, now slightly lower, closing at $129.69. The company also shared its Q2 earnings report, which shows that Google still has revenue growth, with search, media, and cloud being the strong points.

Google’s revenue increased to $74.6 billion from $69.7 billion in the year-earlier period, according to analysts. The company’s profits have also been better than expected, pushing its stock price up about 6% last July. Search revenue saw steady growth despite undoubtedly some users switching to AI chatbots, and Google’s cloud business saw a revenue increase of 28% to $8 billion.
Google and Alphabet’s steady revenue growth, despite having to face very real challenges from AI competition to the decline in the digital ad market, just goes to show that years of great service and business branding matter. With Google ready to embrace generative AI, we can only imagine the power Google will continue to hold.
