Elon Musk Shushes Twitter’s Bird Brand Away, Replaced with Favored Letter, “X”

The social media app most of us know and love as Twitter is undergoing transformation into “X,” as seen from the replacement of its former blue bird logo with a new official logo already live on the website.

The owner of the altered app, Elon Musk, began hinting at this change through a series of tweets last Sunday morning and expressed that the “Twitter brand,” as well as every word associated with it, will gradually disappear.

Musk’s fascination with the letter “X” is already well known. Before the online financial services company PayPal became PayPal, its founder, Musk, named it X.com back in 1997. Along with his space startup, SpaceX, which also has “X” as the logo, Musk very recently founded an AI company he decided to name X.ai.

Ever since Musk acquired Twitter for $44 billion last November, he had also talked about turning the social network into “X, the everything app” quite a few times. Last April, Musk further proved his determination by changing Twitter’s legal name from Twitter Inc. to X Corp, and so it is apparent that this brand change was premeditated.

Now that the customer-facing brand for the bird app has started to follow its legal entity name, how much will the change actually affect the famed social media app?

Bird Branding

It is indisputable that the bird app’s corporate brand has already been very much ingrained in our modern society. The words associated with Twitter, such as “tweet” and “retweet,” for example, are so regularly used and rooted in everyday conversations that they have become part of the Oxford Dictionary as verbs, showing how widespread and deeply embedded Twitter’s influence is in language.

Plenty of analysts and brand agencies have criticized the move Musk made due to Twitter being an incredibly recognizable social media brand. Founded in 2006, such influence took 17 years to grow, and it seems impossible for the bird app’s approximately 353 million users as of July 2023 to instantaneously make the switch themselves and call the app “X” instead of what they’ve been calling it all these years.

In view of that, it is mind-boggling from both a business and brand perspective that Musk made this shift, as not only have Twitter users complained about this change and plenty threatening to leave, but building customer trust with a new product name may also be an arduous task.

So, How does Musk plan to break free from the image that is Twitter and rebuild X’s cultural and linguistic presence, now from scratch?

The New X

Though Musk has uttered that there will be far more transformations applied to the app, at the moment, the switch to a new logo has only been visible on the website version of Twitter. The logo replacement came about after Musk called on Twitter users to submit logo designs and said that a suitable “X” logo would go live worldwide the next day if a suitable one were posted.

Musk then pinned a video created by a Twitter user named Sawyer Merritt, which features the new “X” logo, changing his own profile photo to display it. Musk had stated that the new logo is an “interim” one, leaving room for potential changes in the future.

While other tech companies have undergone renaming, it is not far from usual to see that they’ve retained their core product names. In contrast, “X” marks a complete departure from Twitter, which brand valuation consulting firm Brand Finance has analyzed to potentially impact about $4 billion or more of brand value.

The change has apparently led to advertisers leaving the platform, though the exit has probably also been caused by Musk’s controversial interactions and his embracing of tweeters who broke content rules. According to Musk, the advertising revenue at Twitter has decreased by more than 50% since last October.

It remains uncertain what consequences the bird app’s major rebranding may do, but some groups believe that Musk’s own personal brand power may be as strong if not stronger than that of Twitter’s, which may prove to be an advantage against negative effects.
