Build Complex Internal Tooling with Onu's Automated Scripts

Developer-First Tool that Takes Away the Pain of Building Complex Frontends

Software engineers play a vital role in a company. Not only are they in charge of developing products for customers and internal tools that can create better management and work efficiency for a whole company, but they also have to help ops* and CX* teams in the process.

Engineers often need to run repetitive, at times one-off, scripts and perform complicated workflows to assist their ops/CX teammates, which takes up plenty of their time and resources, resources that could be allocated to a company’s more strategic, big-picture needs.

The work that engineers do for ops/CX can be performed more optimally with internal tools, but building internal tools, even with no-code/low-code SaaS* designed to simplify development, requires a considerable portion of frontend work. With the responsibilities of engineers already piling up, the development of internal tools might end up in the backlog, forcing engineers and ops to waste time manually performing tasks.

*Ops: Operations, domain of activities related to the management and maintenance of an organization’s IT infrastructure, systems, and processes.
*CX: Customer Experience focuses on understanding and improving the experiences customers have when interacting with a company or its products and services. It usually involves user interface design, customer support, and marketing.
*No-code/low-code SaaS: No-code and low-code SaaS (Software as a Service) platforms are software development tools used to create applications or software with minimal to no coding.

It is an understatement to say this arrangement makes everybody’s job in development way harder than it should be. What Onu, a YC-backed startup founded by Chine Ikoro and Lindsey Redd, has done is create tools that uncomplicate an engineer’s day-to-day work, by providing script automation, auto-generated UIs, and ways to build internal tools without any need for time-consuming frontend coding.

Automated Scripts and Workflows

Several platforms designed to help engineers perform all necessary workflows very much exist, including Prefect and Airflow. Both focused on providing automation, Prefect automates script executions and data processing, while also monitoring data pipelines. Airflow automates and schedules an engineer’s arbitrary tasks, ensuring no scripts or codes are missing.

None of said platforms are built specifically for engineers who have extra responsibilities of assisting their ops/CX teammates and building internal tools, though. One of the only ones who do is ScriptRunner, a developer-first, cloud-based platform that automates repetitive workflows and is equipped with code editors as well as a built-in library of pre-made scripts that allow zero frontend codes.

As Onu and ScriptRunner share similar features, serving similar purposes, what are some of the tricks Onu still has up its sleeve?

Versatile and Fully Accommodating

Aside from giving engineers the ability to turn their ops/CX-related scripts into production-ready internal tools quickly without any need for front-end development, Onu allows developers to run scripts in their own environment without having to SSH into production.

Onu’s platform is embedded with a tracker that enables teammates, inside and outside of the engineering team, to see logs of each task’s previous executions. Anyone granted access can see what executions were run, who ran them, and the results of said executions. If there are cases of error, the platform is equipped with a debugging tool that makes identifying and fixing errors easier.

With the endless responsibilities engineers have, Onu’s platform can help relieve the stress, by not only taking care of frontend and auditing but also 3rd party integrations. Onu is integrated with cloud providers like AWS and Azure, monitoring tools like Datadog and Prometheus, CI/CD tools like Jenkins, and communication tools like Slack and Microsoft Teams.

Lastly, Onu offers scalability, versatility, and ease of use. The platform can be used to build and manage internal tools of all sizes and has an intuitive user interface that can help teammates outside of the engineering team operate its tools easily. Teams can onboard new users to their products and send welcome emails, cancel a subscription, refund the customer, and update their CRMs, as well as fix out-of-sync user accounts and notify a Slack channel of the fix, all automated and taken care of by Onu.

By using Onu’s platform, engineers can center their focus solely on writing scripts and maintaining internal tools, creating a more efficient and optimal work environment for the entire development team.
